Most people know OYO. Far fewer know the company behind it is called Oravel Stays Limited — incorporated in February 2012 in Gujarat by a college dropout named Ritesh Agarwal, who was 19 at the time.
The idea was straightforward: take India's sea of small, unbranded budget hotels and bring them under one roof — standardised, digitally bookable, price-consistent. OYO didn't own the properties. It just put its name on them, provided software tools to the hotel owners, and handled the customer-facing side. The model scaled fast — almost too fast.
By the late 2010s, OYO was one of the most talked-about startups in the world, raising billions from SoftBank and expanding aggressively into Southeast Asia, Europe, and the US. Then came the unraveling — mass layoffs, angry hotel partners, write-downs, and a DRHP that got withdrawn before it could go anywhere. The company spent the better part of 2021–2023 cutting costs, exiting unprofitable markets, and trying to convince the world it had grown up.
The turnaround story has some legs. The business reportedly swung to a small profit in FY24 before slipping back into a loss in FY25. The platform now operates across 35+ countries, serving roughly 180 million customers a year.
