The National Stock Exchange has been India's trading backbone for over three decades, yet ironically, it has never been listed on its own platform. That long-standing paradox is finally about to end.
NSE's journey toward going public has been anything but smooth. It first attempted an IPO back in 2016 but got entangled in regulatory trouble with SEBI over governance issues and the infamous co-location scandal, where certain brokers allegedly got preferential access to market data. That controversy kept the exchange in regulatory limbo for years.
Fast forward to January 2026 SEBI finally handed NSE a clean No Objection Certificate, and the exchange's board wasted no time approving the IPO plan in February. The draft papers are expected to be filed with SEBI in the first two weeks of June 2026, with the actual listing likely before the year ends.
The IPO will be an Offer for Sale, meaning early investors and stakeholders are cashing out rather than the exchange raising fresh money. The valuation being talked about is somewhere around ₹5 lakh crore a number that would make it the biggest IPO in Indian history.
